LEGAL OPINION ABOUT SITE Legal opinion concerning the granting of a lease of the land at the corner of Meek and Medway streets to the Oamaru Returned Services’ Association for club rooms, was furnished by the borough solicitors (Messrs Hislop and Creagh and Main) to the Oamaru Borough Council last night. The opinion stated that the land was vested in the council in trust for the purpose of further utility for the town and the inhabitants of Oamaru, and the council could not let any portion of the land involved, save in pursuance of the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1933, and the Public Bodies Leases Act, 1908. Any lease granted would have to be submitted to public auction or public tender at an upset rental. The council decided to take the necessary steps to secure legislation to permit a lease being given to the R.S.A. at a “ peppercorn ” rental.
