WAR SERVICE

WAITAKI OLD BOYS Further details of the war service of Waitaki old boys were contained in the report of the rector of the school (Mr F. Milner) to the Board of Governors yesterday afternoon. Since his last notification four old boys had been killed and eight wounded, and two were missing. Two more old boys had received decorations for work among the blind of India. Mr Len Barsdell had been appointed military censor on general MacArthur’s staff in New Guinea. High praise had been earned by Chaplain G. D. Falloon for his services on Vella Lavella as padre. Mr J. M. Bertram, formerly on the staff of the British Embassy at Chungking, was now definitely reported to be a prisoner of war in Japanese hands. The rector also referred to the establishment of the East Mosely Cricket Ground in England as a memorial to the late Captain F. E. Smith, an old boy who was killed at El Alamein. The project was nearly completed, said the rector, and there had been gratifying support from English cricket bodies.
