CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL

OAMARU'S ATTITUDE Reporting to the Oamaru Borough Council last night on the conference held, in Dunedin to consider plans for a memorial to commemorate the centenary of Otago, the Mayor (Mr J. C. Kirkness) said he had made it -clear at the conference that Oamaru was not prepared to commit itself to any proposal at that stage, and at most there would be only a token contribution to the fund. Oamaru, Mr Kirkness said, did not look on Dunedin as its centre, but was the centre for Nc-rth Otago, and had its own commitments for patriotic funds and the appeal for R.S.A. club rooms Oamaru had its own centennial buildings, and might want to‘ extend that memorial at the time of-its own centenary. Cr A. R. Tait also reported on the meeting, and the council approvea the stand taken by its delegates and endorsed the sentiments expressed by them.
