SUNDAY CONCERTS
BAND REFUSED PERMISSION An application by the Oamaru Garrison Band for the use of the Gardens on the afternoon of February 27 or the Opera House in the event of wet weather, and also ’ the use of the Opera House on the same evening for concerts, was refused ill the meant’me by the Oamaru Borough Council last night. A lengthv discussion took place on the subject of Sunday concerts, during which it was pointed out that no afternoon charge was made for the Opfera House, and with increased wages under awards it would be necessary to do so. The opinion was unanimously expressed by councillors that they were not antagonistic towards the band, but that they were opposed to Sundays being commercialised. The questions of reviewing the rental charges for the Opera House on Sundays and the submission of Sunday concert programmes for approval were referred to the Town Hall Committee for report to the next council meeting.
