LLOYD’S WAR MEDAL

THE AWARD TO DR HYDE Lloyd's Shipping Gazette, of October 14, contains the citation relative to the bestowal of Lloyd’s War Medal on Dr John Hyde, M.8.E., a member of a family with historical associations with Central Otago. The incident which led to this honour being conferred on Dr Hyde occurred on an Australian ship, on which he was surgeon. The citation runs: “When the ship was hit several times by bombs from enemy aircraft while lying in port she was set on fire and eventually blew up. During the attack the wharf to which the ship was moored caught alight, and an oil pipeline was cut, causing oil to spread on the surface of the sea around her. Dr Hyde showed calm courage and a high sense of duty throughout. He attended to the casualties while the attack continued, and remained on board to the last, with complete disregard of his personal safety. He then helped to get the injured ashore through the oil Which was spreading over the sea. His brave efforts undoubtedly saved the lives of many of the wounded.”
