CROQUET
SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS The South Island croquet tournament, which is being held in Dunedin, was commenced yesterday at the Watea and Leith greens. The weather was sunny and warm, but a strong wind made the conditions somewhat difficult for the players. Generally, however, croquet of a very good standard was seen. The greens were in excellent order, and the Watea greens in particular were very keen. The official opening was performed at the Watea Club by the president of the New Zealand Croquet Council, Mr R. W. McCreath, of Gore, and Mrs W. E. Gibson, manager, welcomed the visitors It was stated that, owing to war conditions, the South Island tournament had lapsed for several years until the present occasion.
