ADDINGTON MARKET

GENERAL EASING IN VALUES (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 5. The continued dry weather caused a substantial increase in the entries at today’s Addington market, and values eased all round, particularly for fat cattle. Store Sheep.—The entry totalled 3072, of which 2450 were new season’s lambs. Owing to the weather, these were below the standard of previous years, and the prices disappointed vendors. The top figure was 19s 9a for a line of 171, and another large line made 16s 2d. Several other large lots made from 15s Id to 16s Id, with second drafts selling from 11s 5d to 14s Id. The ewes and lambs forward were in poor condition, and met with a very dragging sale, prices ranging from 7s 3d to 14s, all counted, with old sheep down to 3s Id. A line of small two-tooth ewes made 29s 3d.

Fat Sheep.—The entry numbered 4000 The quality generally was very poor, and it was the worst yarding this season. There was only an occasional pen of attractive young sheep, and these were eagerly sought after by the trade at prices not far below recent values . The ewe section contained mostly old sheep, and these sold at schedule rates. The highest price for wethers was 44s Id and for ewes 29s Id, but the average price for the best of the ewes ranged from 21s to 235, Cattle.—Owing t'o the dry spell, there was a very large entry of cattle, totalling 690, compared with 435 at the last sale a fortnight ago. The market opened much lower than at previous sales, and receded further in the final stages, heavy prime bodies being 40s to 45s a head lower. Average cattle were down by up to 40s, and prime young steers were down about 255. Best beef made from 50s to 53s per lOOlb. good 45s to 495, medium and heavy 40s to 445, ordinary to 395. Pigs.—There was a fair entry in the porker section, and the sale was firmer by Is to 2s a head on the Christmas market. Competition was keen for all classes in' the bacon section at late values. The average price per lb was 8d to Bjd.
