RAILWAYMEN’S MEMORIAL

The removal by the Railways Department of the Passchendaele memorial plaques from the locomotive Ab-608 has been the subject of a protest to the general manager of the Railways Department (Mr E. Casey) by the executive of the Dunedin Returned Services’ Association. These plates were placed on the engine to commemorate those members of the staff who fell in the Great War. The letter to Mr Casey stated that -t was understood the department intended to have the plaques placed on the Christchurch Railway Station. There was a general desire on the part of ex-service-men in the Dunedin district for the memorial to be perpetuated in the present manner until circumstances dictated that they had served their purpose. The executive did not consider this point had . yet been reached, but if the department had not intended to leave the plaques on Ab-608, it was suggested that they should be transferred to another main line ex ~ press locomotive in order to maintain a memorial 'to .ex-railwaymen of the last war.
