MIDDLEMARCH
Obituary.—By the death of Mrs Janet K. Williams at Middlemarch on August 2, the Strath-Taieri district lost one of its oldest and most respected residents. Mrs Williams was born at East Taieri in 1861, and later resided in Green Island for some years. With her late husband, Mr W, S. Williams, she and the family removed 50 years ago to Middlemarch, where they set up a bakery business. Mrs Williams was keenly interested in all matters of local interest, and was a staunch supporter of the Presbyterian Church. Her husband died 23 years ago, and she is survived by a family of three sons and three daughters, all of whom are married. One son, T. J. Williams, made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War. A. and P. Society’s Social.—The StrathTaieri A. and P. Society held a successful and well-attended social in the A. and P. Hall on Friday evening last for the purpose of presenting the cups and trophies won at the annual show. The president, Mr A. Robertson, thanked all who had assisted in making the show such a success, and presented the trophies to the successful exhibitors. The music for the dance was stipplied by Peat’s Orchestra, and Mr W. Brensell acted as the M.C. Young People’s Social.—An enjoyable young people’s social was held in the Presbyterian Sunday School Hall on Thursday evening last. A bright and attractive programme was arranged by Mrs N. Keast and Mr W. Robson, and was much appreciated. The following contributed items:—Mrs Steel, Misses D. Kinsman, P. Thompson, J. Ayson, M. Robertson, A. Keast, I. Kidd, A. Matheson, and Mr J. Leckie, and a vocal quartet by N. Keast, B. Tisdall, V. Smith, and D. Peat.
