QUEENSTOWN

Lake County Council.—The Lake County Council met, on Thursday last; There were present: Crs D. H. Cockburn (chairman), L. Lee, W. Gordon, and D. C. Aubrey.—Cr Lee, whom ' the chairman delegated to attend a meeting of the Main ■Highways Council in Dunedin with the inspector, reported that the allocations of grants were more satisfactory than was expected. No new construction, except work of national importance, would be entertained. The council was allowed £137 for engineering fees—Mr Bridgman, honorary secretary of the Wanaka Ratepayers’ Committee, wrote outlining proposals under the town planning scheme, and stressing the necessity for more building sites. ■ It was stated that these rnatters would be brought before the town planning officer and Surveyor-general in Wellington ,at the end of the month by a county delegation.—The secretary of the, Southland Hospital Board advised that the levy •on local ■ authorities, would remain the same as last year’s, due to the increased hospital bed allowance of 3s from the Social Security Fund.—ln response to a request from the Main Highways Board, the council decided to submit the following bridge proposals: Rees Valley bridge, £12,000; Long Gully, £1000; Sargood’s race bridge, Bullock Creek (Wanaka), and a bridge at Cardrona.— The financial statement showed a debit of £3094 17s 9d after payment of accounts amounting to £792 19s 6d. The outstanding revenue .was £3252.—A general rate of lid in the £ on all ratepayers’ property in the county was approved by a formal motion. Acclimatisation Society.—The annual meeting was held on-Thursday last. Dr W. A. Anderson (president) occupied the chair. Mr Howe was elected in place of the late Mr H. Buckham.—The first meeting of the council was held subsequently and a motion of sympathy with relatives of the late Mr Simson, a former member of the council, was passed.—Colonel Mackenzie was reelected as the .council’s delegate on the South Island Council.—lt was decided to invest £IOO in the Third Liberty, Loan The council decided in'future to post the names of game licence-holders in a prominent place;—A committee was appointed to inspect the hatchery with a view to making use of it in the .near future. • Prices of Fine Wool.—A representative meeting of high country runholders and members of the local Sheepowners’ Uniori was held recently in Queenstown. Mr J. Burnett‘was the chairman. Many problems were discussed, especially the relative prices of fine wools in the present schedule of prices. A strong protest was embodied in a resolution deploring the methods adopted. The resolution, with confirmatory evidence is to be forwarded to the appropriate quarters.
