Industrial Man-power.—A sitting of the Industrial Man-power Committee—Messrs M. W. Grantham (chairman), S. D. Macpherson, and H. H. Gillard—was held on Thursday afternoon. George Alexander Neilson, aged 54 years, appealed against a fine»of IQs lOd, one day’s wages, for being absent from his employment at the linen flax factory, for a period of 42 days in a period of five months. After evidence had been given by the appellant and by Richard Knight, factory manager, who said Neilson had repeatedly been absent from work through causes that could be avoided. Decision was reserved.—Gladyn Charles Young, aged 22 years, single, grade 111, appealed against the direction of the man-power officer in refusing the termination of his employment as a fisherman with the Pegasus Fishing Company, Stewart Island. The appellant stated that he was called in a ballot and his employers appealed for him, to which he objected, but before the appeal was heard he left his employment, and the appeal was withdrawn. He was released from the army on condition that he returned to the fishing industry. After three days he left his employment with the Pegasus Company, as he was unable to carry oh owing to 'a shoulder injury from a bullet wound received some years ago. He came to Tapanui and obtained employ - meht at the linen flax factory, where he desired to remain. -Mr S. G. Bingham, man-power officer/at InVercargill, said he considered that the appellant had obtained ( release from the army without having any intention of returning to the fishing industry. The-decision of the committee was reserved, the appellant to remain in his present position in the meantime. Soldiers’ Farewell Committee.—The annual meeting of the Tapanui Soldiers’ Farewell Committee was held on Friday night. Mr J. L. Wylie (chairman) presided over a good attendance. The secretary (Mr E. Arnold) read the annual report and balance sheet, the latter showing a fair credit balance. The chairman congratulated the committee on its efforts, and on the splendid work put into the social gatherings by the executive. Twenty-six men had been entertained at 11 social gatherings during the year. To Mr Arnold (the secretary) and Mrs Arnold, and to the members of the executive, he expressed gratitude for their splendid work. The following officers were elected: Chairman, Mr J. L. Wylie; secretary, Mr E. Arnold; auditor, Mr J. C. Cameron;. committee—Mesflames Arnold, Cameron, Kerse, McDonald, Varcoe, Naylor, and Edgar, Messrs J. A. McDonald, Cameron, G. Metzger, B. Burns. F. H. Hancock, W, B. Naylor, H. J. Hay, and li. Rodger. Books for Armed Forces.—On Saturday, the Boy Scouts, under the auspices of the local W.W.S.A., held a successful collection of .reading matter for the armed forces. It Is their intention to hold another “ drive ” for waste rubber and paper in a fortnight’s time.
