Fanners’ Union.—A well-attended meeting of the Clut'na branch of the Farmers’ Union on Saturday night was presided over by Mr S. Mosley. It was decided to co-operate in the “ drive ” by the National Patriotic Fund Board for books for military camps and transports.—Mr J. A. Johnston said that farmers were being served with notices to cut gorse at a very inconvenient time. After some discussion, the matter was left in .abeyance, although members were agreed that the spread of gorse in both the Bruce and Clutha Counties was rather alarming.— It was resolved to protest against the action of the Marketing Department in fixing the price of bacon pigs at 8d a lb, as being too low. The protest is to be sent to the Provincial Executive.—A lengthy discussion followed the reading of a letter from the provincial secretary on the subject of potato grading and the suggestion of the branch that the mesh used for determining F.A.Q. be reduced from 2in to ljin. Several- potato, growers present gave illustrations of' the grading system, which, they said, worked to the disadvantage of the farmer. Mr S. Willocks said it had cost him £22 to have 30 tons/of potatoes graded in Dunedin. The rejects were sold at £1 a ton less than the others. Several members said that if the 2in mesh were insisted upon it would mean that they would' not grow Kin o ' Edward potatoes another season. On the motion of Mr Anderson, the provincial Executive is to be asked to forward a protest from the branch to the Food Controller in Wellington Personal.—Mr P. C. Faris. station master, has been advised by the Air Department that his son, George Arthur Faris (who was killed in an air crash on January 9 last in British West Africa), was promoted. from pilot officer to the rank of flying officer, with effect from October 1, 1942. The Air Secretary added: "I regret the delay in this information being made available, but trust that the knowledge that your son’s splendid service was recognised by well-deserved promotion will be some consolation to you in your great loss."
