OBITUARY

Miss Helen Kirkland Dalrymplejounger daughter of the Rev. A. M. and Mrs Dal rymple, formerly of Puerua, whose death occurred on Friday, came to Dunedin as a schoogirl and attended the Otago Girls High School and later the Otago Utfiversity, where she gained her B.A degree. She spent some years in Winton and Napier, and was appointed to the staff ot the Otago Girls’ High School in 1913, after which she gained her diploma of education. In 1938 she retired on superannuatlbn. Miss Dalrymple was a woman of wide interests, who exerted a strong influence for good on the hundreds of girls whom she taught. Botany was her subject, and her intense interest in and wide knowledge and love of New Zealand native plants were imparted not only in the schoolroom, but on the many picnics and rambles on which she led her pupils. She was one of those who revived the Field Club in 1915, and was its president for several terms. She published two booklets of her own, with illustrations, on orchids and fungi. Miss Dalrymple was an ardent worker for the Student Christian Movement in the school, and organised schoolgirl camps at Pounawea for secondary school girls for many years. She was a Sunday school teacher, and since (the war had been superintendent of the Roslyn Presbyterian Sunday School. After her retirement she lived a very busy life, using her leisure time in the service of others and performing many deeds of personal kindness. She was active in the A.R.P., and organised net making in Roslyn. Other interests were the High School Ex-girls’ Club and the Otago University Women's Association. She is survived by one sister, Miss Jessie Dalrymple, of Highgate.
