MILTON

Borough Council.—The monthly meeting of the Milton Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening. Those present were the Mayor (Mr W. J. Cockburn), Crs P. W. Gray, H. Wilson. A. R. Sellars, F. Haynes', I. Lee, J. Anderson, J. Keogh, and G. Melville. The use of the Coronation Hall supper room was granted to the St. John Ambulance Association for the ensuing year on the same terms as previously.—Attention was drawn to the number of overhanging hedges, and those responsible are to be asked to remedy the position—The Mayor moved a vote of sympathy with all those bereaved by the war, and made special reference to the death of Seaman Roy, son of Mr J. A, Roy, M.P.—Considerable discussion took place regarding the removal of nightsoll and ashes In the borough, the successful tenderer having had to withdraw his application. A committee of the chairmen of the Finance’, Works, and Reserves Committees was appointed to deal with the matter.—Cr Anderson said he considered the time was ripe for the borough to advance loans to ratepayers for the purpose of installing septic tanks. He moved In that direction. Cr Sellars, who seconded the motion, stated that the present mode of payment would go a long way to finance such a scheme. Crs Gray, Melville, and Keogh were appointed a committee to reDort at a future meeting.—At the conclusion of the meeting the councillors were the guests of the Mayor at supper. St. John Ambulance.—The annual meeting of the Milton St. John Ambulance Association was held on Tuesday night, Mr A. F. Wethey presiding. The president extended a welcome to the Chief

Commissioner, Lieutenant-colonel Barclay and Mrs Barclay, and to the district superintendent, Mr E. Y. Hughes. The balance sheet, which showed a credit ba’ance, was adopted. Mr Hughes explained that as the division had grown, two separate classes would now be held, association and brigade. with a secretary and treasurer tor each class. The president congratulated Mrs Taylor on her leadership throughout the year, and stated that the work done reflected great credit on her. Mrs Taylor, Misses M. Gray, and I. B. Melville, were appointed delegates to attend the first annual meeting of the South Otago Subcentre at Balclutha. Congratulations were extended to Miss M. Gray on her appointment to the district staff as lady district Instructional officer and to Miss A. M. Anderson, on being accepted for overseas service as a V.A. The election of officers resulted as fol'ows: Patron, the Mayor (Mr W. J. Cockburn); president, Mr A. F. Wethey; committee—Messrs U. Walker and H. Wilson, and Mrs Jas. Bowie. Home Nursing Division: Divisional surgeon, Dr .T. N. Edgar; lady superintendent. Mrs J. Taylor: lady ambulance officers, Mrs R. Beardsmore and Miss I. B. Melville; sergeants, Misses M. Martin and F. Dignan; corporals, Misses Ivy Crawford and Gwen Taylor; secretary, Mrs H. Kennard: treasurer and storekeeper, Mi9s Joyce Hislop. Personal.—Lieutenant-colonel Barclay, Chief Commissioner for New Zealand, St. John Ambulance Association, is at present a visitor to Mi-ton.—The Rev. Professor J. A. Allan, of Dunedin, has consented to be the'speaker at the Anzac Day commemoration service.—The Rev. Gordon Parker, who has been in charge of the Milton Methodist circuit for the past three years, has received notification of his transfer to Kaiapoi, and expects to leave early in April. The Rev. Leslie Norwell, of Reefton, has been appointed to fill the vacancy.
