TROTTING NOTES
By Sentinel It is reported that M. B. Edwards intends going into business in Greymouth. He may train a few gallopers. It was reported some little time ago that the Metropolitan Trotting Club would make ah early announcement in connection with the August meeting. It takes some little time to tune a horse to racing form, and an early announcement would be appreciated by trainers. A correspondent of the. Australian Trotting Record writes a castigating letter in which he claims that not one club is entitled to use the word "trotting." They are " hoppled pacing " clubs catering for and encouraging the- breeding of pacers only. The same charge cannot be levelled against the clubs in this country as the real trotter is protected by the rules. It is, however, a fact that the clubs which endeavoured to cater for young trotters had to abandon the idea because trainers did not produce the goods for which the Forbury Park Trotting Club most laudably endeavoured to cater. The local club staged the New Zealand Trotting Stakes for 14 years, but did not receive the support to justify its continuation. Judged by results in both Australia and New Zealand, the ability to produce a young trotter capable of maintaining a level gait seems to be beyond most trainers. This no doubt is due to the fact that the hopples completely dominate light harness racing, and without this artificial aid to the development of speed the average trainer is lost.
