By Sentinel Recent arrivals at Wingatui include Valens, Sunny Comet, Overland Red, Cherokee, Valcron, Symbol, and Foxette. Song Boy has enlarged and doubtfullooking fetlock joints in front, but works quite soundly on them. Visiting trainers from Timaru state that the Washdyke tracks have been in good order for training operations. Foxbridge has sired winners of about £21,000 this season, or twice as much as Beau Pere, who is next on the list. A. Ingram will have the mount on Valens and I. Walther on Sunny Comet on Saturday. W. Connor will ride Compeer and L. W. Hare Taxpayer in their engagements. Tissue did not appear to put enough dash into her work on TUesday morning, and yesterday she was treated to strong work, with a sharpening sprint. Locrian is shaping well in his schooling over hurdles at Riccarton. He is a four-year-old by Iliad—Joy Princess, by Chief Ruler—Deborah, by Martian. Valens and Sunny Comet both worked yesterday morning over two circuits oi the inside grass. Both horses moved freely. Overland Red also'got through a useful task. A. E. Ellis will have the mount on Slayer in the Otago Steeplechase, and this will form a combination that is assured of strong support. The Trial Stakes is for non-winners, but the majority of those engaged have been placed in one or more races. The exceptions are Latest Song. Miss Sally, Damascus, and Maiden's Money. Yesterday was an off day for fast work at Wingatui. and the cours2 proper was closed. A number of were worked on the inside grass and sand track, including several visiting horses. It has been rumoured that Gold Flight is a doubtful starter in the Birthday Handicap. She, however, figures in the list of mounts for L. J. Ellis, who will also ride Milton Abbas, Johnemby, and Kernel. One of the little-known lot engaged at Wingatui includes Troja. He has started five times this season without gaining a place. Troja is a four-year-old gelding by Nightmarch—Gay Helen, by IliadPraise, by Limond—Eulogy. Several horses claim two engagements at Wingatui on Saturday. The Kensington Park Club (Sydney) has a rule which debars accepting with a horse in two races. It has. however, frequently occurred that a horse has proved capable of winning twice' during the same day and even three times.
Damascus, who is engaged in the Trial Stakes, has not appeared this season. He started once as a two-year-old last season. Damascus is a three-year-old gelding by Paper Money—Aspiring, by Some Boy II Silver Peak, by Adjudge—Oblong, bv Obligado. According to track reports. Gnohill is galloping well at Invercargill. He., won at the Wingatui winter meeting as a three-year-old in heavy going. Last season he won once and was placed five times in 15 starts. This season he has started nine times and reached a place in one race. Apparently Gnohill has'trained on and is at his best in soft going. On some of her form Maggiore looks nicely treated in the Birthday Handicap. For instance, when second to Bashful Lady in the Southern Champion Hack Handicap, run at Riverton, she gave Valcron. who finished fourth. 111 b. At Wingatui thev meet on even terms. Maggiore has won five times this season. Maggiore started five times as a three-year-old and has made a good improvement this season.
