RED CROSS SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING The annual general meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society was held in the University Club, Queen's Buildings, yesterday afternoon. Delegates were present from the following sub-centres in Otago: Anderson's Bay, Balclutha, Berwick, Brown Bay, Clarendon-Milburn, Concord, Dalmore, Opoho, Green Island, Kaitangata, Lawrence, Macandrew Bay, Milton, Mosgiel, North-East Valley, Owaka, Queenstown, St. Clair-Caversham, Tomahawk, and Warepa. Moving the .adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, Mr Charles V. Smith (chairman of the centre), gave a resume of the work done throughout the year. Thanks were expressed for the splendid work accomplished by the centres.

The following office-bearers were elected lor the ensuing year: President, Mr Charles V. Smith; committee—Miss Belle McLean (Dunedin). Miss E. L. Wilkin (Duncdini, Mrs R. Dawson (Dunedin), Mr J. W. Smeaton (Dunedin), Mrs W. Elliot (Clar-endon-Milburn), Mrs G. F. McKelJar (St. Clair-Caversham), Mrs J. J. Ross (Broad Bay), Mrs R. R. North (Lawrence), and Mrs Pilling (Mosgiel); secretary, Miss J. Patricia Duncan; delegates to the Dominion Council (Wellington), Miss McLean and Mr Smith.

Miss E. L. Wilkin, director of voluntary aids, spoke of the work of the V.A.Vj in the country districts in Otago. Very good results were shown in some districts, and she expressed the hope that by the next annual meeting all sub-centres would have a voluntary aid movement. It was essential, she said, that the women should be trained in home nursing, hygiene, and first aid.

Mrs W. Elliot, of Clarendon, addressed the meeting on the subject' of " The Spirit of Red Cross." She gave an outline of the foundation and growth of the Red Cross up to the present day, and said that valuable service was given throughout the world by this organisation, which had no colour bar or creed. On the motion of Miss B. McLean, a vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Elliot for her interesting address. It was decided that in future the annual meeting of the centre should be held in Show .Week in June.
