BURGLARY CHARGE
FRIEND’S CLOTHES STOLEN COOK FOR SENTENCE Arrested in Wellington, William Henry Gardiner, a cook, aged 30, appeared before Mr H. W. Bundle. S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, charged with breaking and entering the home of Bernard Sullivan, at 7 Rawhitl street, Tainul, 'on November 27 last, and stealing clothing valued at £l7 6s. He pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
Bernard Sullivan, a window-dresser, said that his wife was left at home alone on the night of the burglary, which was not discovered until the next afternoon, after some clothing had been found in the garden. Acting Detective William Harper, oi Wellington, said he located the accused at the Majestic Cabaret in Wellington on January 10, and accompanied him to the St. George Hotel, where he was staying. Witness told the accused that he was suspected of having committed a theft in Dunedin, and the accused admitted having pawned the clothing in Wellington He said he had sold the pawn ticket to an unknown man, but he later confessed that the stolen clothing was at the Grand Hotel, Wellington, where it was subsequently recovered. The accused, Detective Harper added, was already serving a sentence of imprisonment.
