PILFERING ON THE RAILWAYS
TO THE EDITOB Sir,—l wonder if the general public realises the extent of the petty pilfering that is going on in the railway. I know of two people besides myself who have had cases of fruit tampered with between the time of railing in Central Otago and delivery in Dunedin. and a considerable quantity of fruit has been removed. Surely, when the sense of morality seems so low among a section of railway employees, the heads of the department concerned should take some measures to prevent this petty stealing.—l am, etc.; February 2. "Disgusted.
-[We are informed by the Railways Department that very few complaints with respect to pilfering on the Central Otago line have been made during the current fruit season. The complaints that are made are immediately investigated, and in general all possible measures to prevent pilfering are taken by the department—Ed., O.D.T.]
