OTAGO WOOL

THIRD APPRAISAL OFFERING OF 22,820 BALES The Dunedin Stock Agents and Woolbrokers' Association reports that at the third wool appraisal at Dunedin, which was commenced on Monday and completed on the following day, catalogues totalling 22,820 bales were submitted by the various brokers. The quality of the wool on offer was fully representative of the province, the display ranging from coarse crossbreds to merinos. Ths wool opened up in fair condition, but the quality, in general, was below that of last year. The bulk of the back-country clips was offered, and there was also a good percentage of crossbreds from the agricultural areas. The merinos and halfbreds were, on the whole, not so well grown, and the dry conditions prevailing in Central Otago in th± autumn showed its mark on the wool, which was inclined to be thin in the fibre. In some cases tenderness was also noticeable. The wool from this district was also heavier in condition, and dusty and duller in appearance. Some of the crossbreds opened up in excellent, condition, and it was noticeable that the lots from irrigated areas in Central Otago, South Otago, and Tapanui districts were the most outstanding. In most cases the clips that were classed on the stations opened up satisfactorily, but still more care and attention are required in the general get-up and the skirting of the wool. If a clip is not skirted correctly, the values are adjusted accordingly, and the wool is typed on a lower grade. All lots were appraised in accordance with the schedule, which has remained stationary throughout the season, and in some cases, where the wool was heavier in condition, this naturally affected the yield and the price. The top price realised was 20Jd for three bales of super merino grown by Mr P. M. Heffernan, of Moonlight. Some very attractive lines of super fine halfbreds were offered, several lots bringing 18Jd. The next appraisement will be held at this centre early in March, the date to be arranged later.
