CENTRAL OTAGO
LAWRENCE Borough Council.—The monthly meeting of the Lawrence Borough Council was held on Monday evening, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr W. J. Suters) and Crs F. J. Gray, W. Milne, W. Duthie, J. Forbes, M. Girvan, and the clerk, Mr B. S. Fulton.
An application by the Plunket Society for the use of the ladies’ rest room as weekly headquarters for the Plunket nurse was granted.—The Tuapeka Times Newspaper Company’s application for a four months’ refund of the annual special water charge was refused.—The tender of F. Parsons of £2 7s 6d for the painting of skylights in the Town Hall was accepted, and it was reported that the work had been carried out.—The surfaceman’s and race caretaker’s reports and Works, Cemetery, and Reserves Committees’ reports were adopted,—Acccounts totalling £228 3s 6d were passed for payment, and the Finance, Town Hall, and Lighting Committees’ reports, and also the Sanitation, Waterworks, and Baths Committees’ reports, were adopted.—lt was decided that the statutory 10 per cent, penalty be charged on all rates unpaid after February 17.—1 t was decided that a letter of sympathy be sent to Cr R. G. Cotton, of Tuapeka County Council, whose son, Leading Aircraftman R.i G. Cotton, had recently met with an accident in Canada.
The Easter Holidays.—Despite the fact that the annual race meeting at Lawrence has been abandoned for this year, the present indications point towards a large number of visitors being present in the town over the Easter holidays. Entries have already been received for the proposed Easter bowling tournament, and it is proposed to hold a gala day on Easter Saturday. Warden’s Court.—Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Warden’s Court on Monday at Lawrence.—lsabella Allan applied for a renewal of residential site. Granted for a period of 21 years.—Hugh James Kavanagh applied for a renewal of residential site. Granted for a period of 42 years.—R. McCorkindale applied for a renewal of residential site. Granted for a period of 42 years. Personal.—Advice has been received that Private Albert Ledingham, who was recently posted as missing, is a prisoner of war.
In the case Mining Registrar v. Walter Leonard Hughes, claim for arrears of rent on four dredging claims, judgment was given for the plaintiff for £1251 6s lOd, with 15s court costs. Walter Leonard Hughes applied for the surrender of rights on four special dredging claims.—Granted.
