LORNEVILLE MARKET
FAT SHEEP VALUES LOWER (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Jan. 27. There was an extra large yarding of both wethers and ewes at Lorneville stock sale to-day, the majority being of good quality. The number yarded was in excess of local requirements and there was an absence of any material outside competition, with the result that values were easier compared with the previous week by about 2s 6d to 3s a head. Prime quality wethers brought 26s 6d to 28s, good quality medium-weights from 25s to 25s 9d. and light-weights-23s to 24s 6d. Prime maiden ewes made up to 14s 6d, prime quality 11s to 12s 3d, with medium quality sorts ranging from 9s to 10s 3d. There was also a large yarding of fat lambs, consisting mainly of light-weight freezing lambs, with only a small percentage of good quality butchers’ sorts. For good quality lambs butchers competed freely, but competition for freezing lambs was limited. Extra heavy butchers' lambs sold from 26s 6d to 28s, prime quality from 24s 6d to 25s 6d, and light-weights from 21s to 22s 6d. The full yarding of fat cattle consisted mainly of medium quality aged sorts and inferior quality cows. A small percentage of the yarding consisted of good quality medium bullocks, but good quality heifers were in short supply. For better' quality sorts the market was firm to a shade better, but cows, especially aged and inferior, were a little cheaper. Good quality medium-weight bullocks made from £l4 to £ls 7s 6d. handyweights £l2 10s to £l3 10s, with lightweights £ll 5s to £l2. Prime quality heifers sold from £ll 5s to £l2 10s, handy-weights £lO 5s to £lO 15s, and light-weights £7 15s to £8 15s. Good quality cows made from £8 10s to £9 10s, mediums £6 5s to £7, unfinished £5 to £5 15s, with inferior £3 10s to £4 10s.
