LONG SEA SERVICE

TRAWLER MASTER’S DEATH The death has occurred in Auckland of Lieutenant Axel Gottfreich Nilsson, R.N.R. He was born in Gotenbex'g] Sweden, 63 years ago, and he became an apprentice on sailing ships. He worked with the Ashing fleets of the North Sea and Atlantic coasts and secured at an early age his deep sea Ashing master’s certiflcate in England. While still a youth, Lieutenant Nilsson circumnavigated the globe in his own small vessel, making Napier his Anal port of call. He became an acknowledged expert on the Ashing grounds in New Zealand waters. For many years he was master of the steam trawler Countess on the east coast, and when the vessel was bought by Sanford and Company, Ltd., in 1921, he transferred to Auckland and he had lived there ever since. Later, he was master of the large trawler James Cosgrove. On the outbreak of war, he joined the Royal New Zealand Navy. His wife predeceased him two years ago and he is survived by two sons and three daughters.
