LATE SHOPPING NIGHT

RETENTION FAVOURED EXTENSION OF DAYLIGHT SAVING SUGGESTED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 27. A meeting of retail traders called by the secretary of the Wellington Employers’ Association at the request of the Mayor of Wellington, Mr T. C. A. Hislop, was held to-day to consider the proposed temporary abandonment of the late shopping night. The general opinion was against the proposal and an extension of daylight saving was suggested after a long discussion.

The following resolution was adopted:—“That this meeting considers that the retention of the late night is vitally necessary to the interests of the retail shopkeepers, and considers that the position can best be met by a further increase in the amount of daylight saving and arranging shop hours to conform as far as possible with the hours of daylight.’’ A committee was set up to confer with the Mayor and to follow up the suggestion of an extension of daylight saving as a means of overcoming the difficulty.
