DRASTIC STEP
NON-ESSENTIAL FACTORIES CLOSING IN AUSTRALIA WAR PRODUCTION DRIVE (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) PERTH, Jan. 27. Hundreds of Australian factories will be closed within the next few weeks by the Commonwealth Government. This drastic step was announced to-day by the Prime Minister, Mr J. Curtin, at a civic reception in his honour. Mr Curtin said the Commonwealth Government was determined to abolish non-essential industry and use all the labour and machinery possible for war production. The major task would be to rush aeroplane construction.
Mr Curtin appealed to employers not to waste time arguing with the Government. “See how quickly you can adapt yourself to the new state of affairs,” he said. “ Our war mobilisation means that there will soon be in Australia a social order which will be the very antithesis of that which has hitherto prevailed.”
