RICCARTON NOTES

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 18. The conditions were very unpleasant for the work at Riccarton this morning. All the trainers were on hand, with horses ready to gallop on the trial grass track, but a blanket fog enveloped the course, one of the worst of the season, and it was impossible to see any of the work. Dividend (I. Walther) and Battlevale (R. Register) were mates in a school, going twice over the three brush fences in the straight. Battlevale jumped well. Dividend got over safely, but he jumped very big, and he will require some education before he acquires the art of negotiating the brush fences.

A recent addition to E. J. Jennings« team is the six-year-old gelding Rondini, by Gustavo from My Bueaty, by Blackstone from Tangi Maid, by Le Loup. Pie did a little racing in Otago two seasons ago, and Jennings expects to have him ready for another start at Rangiora on Labour Day. E. J. Jennings is workin ga four-year-old by Lord Warden from a sister to the steeplechaser Lord Ranald, and he will have his first race.at Rangiora. He shows promise as a galloper, but after being tried out on the flat it is probable that he will be educated as a jumper. The Leader —Fleeting Glance filly has been sent home by E. J. Jennings, as she developed an internal trouble after she was put in work. A. S. Ellis has made another start on the three-year-old filly by Irish Lancer from Gold Pit. She is a thickset bay, who has grown a little since she w'as broken in last season. She looks as if she was given some exercise before being sent to Riccarton. so it may not take long to get her ready for racing. She will be raced by her breeders. Messrs G. R. Plunter ana P. C Webb, who had some success with the filly’s half-brother. Toro Koura. Although Arabian Night was casca up after the Grand National meeting. C. Emerson has had him doing plenty of strong work lately. He has made good progress, and he will be a fit horse for the Dunedin meeting next month, when the Guineas will be the main attraction, with a run on the first day in a mile hack event. Willow Wood ran a good race in the John Grigg Stakes, and he is going on nicelv in his work. He will be sent to Wingatui next month, with the Dunedin Guineas as one of his engagements, after which he may have a trip to Trentham. He is a speedy customer who should win a race soon. E. C. Parker is working a mare who shows a lot of speed over a few furlongs. She is Evacuate, a flve-year-,old by Nighlmarch from St. Joan, by Jericho from St. Leaven, by Achilles. The first foals by Defaulter have made their appearance, the imported mare Merry Miss and the Paladin mare Lady Burleigh (dam of Nightbeam and Calypso) having produced well-grown colts.
