PROMISING HURDLERS (Special) INVERCARGILL, Sept. 18. The novice jumpers Colonel Rouge and Anglo-French continue to make excellent progress in their preparation for hurdle racing. They were sent over four flights of hurdles this morning and both gave a good display of clean and fast jumping, particularly Colonel Rouge, who was very keen on his tgsk. . Black Bard is also showing plenty of promise, while his stablemate, Knight of Old. again gave a brilliant display when given his second school over hurdles yesterday. Knight of Old shapes like a champion jumper in the making. t The New Zealand Cup candidate Royal Lancer is in steady work again and is hitting out in good style The Colonel Cygnus mare Astral Flash has been recommissioned again after being off the scene for nearly two seasons and is very big in condition This mare showed useful form as g three and four-year-old. and is now in her seventh year. Her dam is the Paper Money mare Flicker. Dr J. E. Rogers’s trio—Sea Lady, Southern Sail and Southern Wave —are alj carrying a bright appearance, and if all goes well with them thev will be raced at the New Zealand Cup meeting in November. Astral Flame is getting through steady work with a view to contesting the steeplechase events at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting next month and is in grand order just now. Doubleack has gone on improving since the Otago Hunt meeting and should be rcadv to show his best form at his next appearance, which will nrobably’ be at the Dunedin spring meeting. There are 47 horses in work at Invercargill and this number will be added to within the next week or so. F. W. Ellis has the biggest team with 13 horses. R. E. McLellan has 10, J, A. Rowland 8. W. E. Hazlett 7, T. F.. Pankhurst 4. F. Voight 3, and A McKenzie 2.

There are six two-year-olds in work at Invercargill, but the only one ready for early racing is the bay filly by Paper Money from Queen Astrid. in F. W. Ellis’s stable. This youngster has done a fair amount of work and can go fast. Her dam. Queen Astrid. was got by Balboa from Fair Rose, and is a half-sister to Galleon. Peony Rose has finished racing and is to visit Man's Pal. Francolin the dam of Dark Flight, Gold Flight, etc., has also been booked to Man's Pal Francolin is in foal to Salmagundi. Dark Flight is standing up to his work well and is in fairly forward condition.

The two-year-old colt by Captain Bunsby from Spionetta. purchased by Mr D. M. Twoedie for lOOgns at the last yearling sales, has been named Alpine. He is a big strong colt and will probably fake a bit of time.
