Offers from farmers to grow more than 2000 acres of linen flax are ,still ' required in the Winton, Otautau,' and Woodlands districts to fill the quota;, fixed for these areas. S During the past, week 120 more acres hate been '.promised for ®e crop,‘but at the present rate, of progress it would be quite itfH possible to reach the quota by the date for sowing the seed. - The area offered in these three districts up to yesterday is only slightly more than half that required. The position in the Gore district is more satisfactory, rather more than threequarters of the 1000 acres required;: having been promised for linert flax. It is noteworthy that the. poorest response; has been received in the’ Wlntopand; Otautau areas, where the crop was grown last year; I ', In the 'districts sur-, rounding these centres only about half , of ' the required area has been offered, while in the Woodlands district the percentage is considerably higher. , ' An appeal to the farmers, of Southland to support the linen flax industry - has been issued by Mr E. A. Cameron. Southland president, of the Farmers Union. The terms., of the contract , offered to growers this season, he states, are much more favourable than last season, and he urges: farmers to co- ■; operate with the Government in the ■ development of an important war-time industry. . •, A „ In the Winton district only 950 acres of the required 2000 have been offeree, an increase since last week of 60 acres. The Otautau area so far promised has , risen this week by 30 acres to 760 out of a total of 1500 acres required. , In the Woodlands district 700 acres of the quota of 1000 have been promised, the gain for the week being 30.
