A REFUGEE FROM AUSTRIA JOINED NEW ZEALANDERS Born in Rumania, Second-lieutenant Harry Jacks, who has been listed among the New Zealand wounded, was educated at the University of Vienna. As a Jew he was driven from Austria when the Nazis gained control. He went to France and studied at the University of Nancy, where he graduated in veterinary science. He came to New Zealand in 1938 and had been employed at the plant diseases research station at Mount Albert. He left as a sergeant in the New Zealand Expetionary Force.
