TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD
ADDRESS BY MR H. L. PATERSON The monthly meeting of the Townswomen’s Guild was held on Tuesday in First Church Hall, the president, Mrs R. S. Black, presiding over a large attendance of members. The secretary reported on the result of a special meeting which had been held at the Home Science School in connection with the supervising of canteens and the satisfactory progress made to date in the classes for cooking and linen servicing for emergency hospitals. Members of the guild were asked to help in the street collection next Friday, June 20, and the necessary arrangements were made to assist in this direction. An amusing play was read, entitled “The Gossipers,” which proved most entertaining and was greatly enjoyed by all present, those taking part being Mesdames Hamer, Porteous, Griffiths and Misses Harvey and Douglas. The speaker for the evening was Mr H, L. Paterson, who gave an interesting talk on the subject of the distribution of the moneys collected for the Comforts for Fighters Fund. His remarks concerning the various ways in which the money was expended proved most illuminating and gave members a muqh better understanding of the many ways in which these funds give help and comfort to the boys overseas. Mr Paterson also urged upon members the great necessity of keeping silent regarding matters of national interest, detailing how serious the results of idle talk might be. / At the conclusion of the meeting the president thanked Mr Paterson and the ladies who had contributed to the evening’s entertainment.
