AIR ACTIVITY IN SYRIA ALLIED RAIDS ON BEIRUT (Rec. 2 a.m.) LONDON, June 12., There were four raids by Allied planes on Beirut last night. The Ankara radio reported that two British columns advancing from Iraq have penetrated far into the north-west areas of Syria. EPIDEMIC OF STRIKES LARGE NUMBER IN AMERICA (Rec. 2 a.m.) NEW YORK, June 12. The New York Times says strikes in firms handling War Department contracts resulted in the loss of 2379 “ man-days ” between January 1 and June 10. The Times adds that 30 strikes are now in prdgress in military industries,' but they are mostly small. These figures of strikes do not include strikes in shipyards, which are crippling shipbuilding'. TARGETS IN THE RUHR i (Rec. 2 a.m.) LONDON, June 12. The R.A.F. carried out a heavy raid on targets in the Ruhr last night. Strong forces visited Dusseldorf, which was one of the main objectives, and heavy damage was done. SOUTHERN ERITREA PORT OF ASSAB CAPTURED J (Rec. 2 a.m.) '/LONDON, June 12. Assab, the last port held by the Italians in southern Eritrea, captured to-day. British troops were landed from warships of the Royal Navy and Royal Indian Navy, and many prisoners were taken. NORTHERN AFRICA ENEMY SHELLING TOBRUK (Rec. 2 a.m.) LONDON, June 12. A report from Cairo states that the enemy has commenced heavy shelling at Tobruk, and . that there has been renewed activity en the part of the German forces in the outer defences. ;
