FUNCTION IN THE COMMUNITY The annual general meeting of the Otago University Court of Convocation was held at the University Club on Monday. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Professor C. E. Hercus; vice-presidents—Professor T. D. Adams, Miss L. S. Morton, and Mr A. K. Ibbotson; clerk, Dr S. N. Slater; committee—Mrs Angus Rossi Dr J. E. Holloway, Dr B. H. Howard, Mr I. G. Garden (editor of the University Chronicle), and Mr H. L. Longbottom. A meeting of the Graduates' Association then took placeT the foregoing officers holding similar positions in the association. After the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet. Professor Adams Invited Dr Hercus to address the meeting. Dr Hercus stressed the importance of the University in the community, and pointed out that from a business point of view alone it constituted one of the city's best assets. He mentioned the penny Tate which was employed in certain Engglish cities, to foster the growth of the universities and instanced this as a possible way in which the far-sighted policy of the early settlers could be maintained. Speaking of the lack of a suitable meeting ground for professors, lecturers, graduates, and students, Dr Hercus envisaged some sort of social centre, such as 1 a university house at which these sections of the University could meet, get to know one another better, and discuss matters of common interest. In such an atmosphere no subject would be too controversial, and as an example of one problem Which could be tackled he cited the need for altering the constitution of the University Council.

At the conclusion of the meeting members were the guests of the retiring president. Professor Adams, at an informal supper. »
