At the height of a rainstorm on Thursday night - the Napier Fire Brigade was called out on a false alarm. If the alarm was sounded deliberately (says the Hawke's Bay Daily Mail) it was a poor Joke at the expense of the firemen, who got thoroughly soaked. The recent warm north-westers have brought chimonanthus, the flowering apricot, and the japonica into bloom in Christchurch. In many gardens chimonanthus, or winter sweet, and the japonica are already flowering, though not proliflcally, and the flowering apricot is still in the bud. Daphne is also flowering early this year.

An unusual case of vandalism and stupidity is reported by Mr C. J. Cutler, curator of the Newtown Zoo, the cutting and slashing of the elephant's saddle. Repairs cost £5. " This has been a very prolific season for rabbits in Southland," declared Mr A. G.
