OCEAN BEACH DOMAIN

ANNUAL MEETING OF BOARD PROTECTIVE WALL AT ST. CLAIR The annual meeting of the Dunedin Ocean Beach Domain Board was held yesterday afternoon. Mr J. Wilson presided, arid also present were Messrs J. J. Marlow, W. A. Scott, W. J. Lovell and F. Wilkinson. Mr Wilson was re-elected chairman and Mr Scott treasurer. Moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, Mr Wilson stated that as soon as the steel was available the extension of the protective wall at St. Clair would be proceeded with. The motion was seconded by Mr Marlow, who expressed pleasure at the board's intention to extend Kettle Park, which, he said, would be a worth-while niece Of work. The St. Clair Beach Improvement Association and the St. Clair Surf Lifesaving Club wrote protesting at the board's decision to extend the protection wall at St. Clair and suggesting instead that a series of shallow terraces should be built. The chairman said that when he was first told of the terraces he was in favour of the scheme, but the city and Harbour Board engineers said that the toe of the terraces would have to be protected with piles. If piles had to be driven, Mr Wilson said, it would be preferable to have the wall as proDosed. No scour would be caused by the proposed wall, and there would be an apron of stone at its foot to break the force of the waves. It was decided to advise the two organisations that the proposal had been fully considered and that the board would act on the engineers' advice.

A letter was received from the commissioner of Crown lands suggesting that the board should take over the Tomahawk Domain as the controlling body had ceased to function.—Mr Wilson said that the domain offered great possibilities of development as there were two good beaches which were very popular with city motorists. There was also a large area suitable for playing grounds.—-It was decided to inspect the area before making a decision.
