STATE ELECTIONS
LABOUR'S MAJORITY PROBABLY EIGHTEEN SYDNEY, May 12. A further checking of the New South Wales election returns to-day disclosed little change except to emphasise Labour's commanding majority. The indications are that Labour will have 54 or 55 members in the new Parliament, giving it a majority of 18 over other parties, including Independents. Grim fights are going on in some doubtful electorates, including the Premier's, and the margin by which three Ministers may be defeated will be exceedingly small. They will probably not know their fate until the end of the week At the moment it would appear that Labour will have 55 in the new Assembly, (he United Australia Party 17, the United Country Party 12, and the Independents 6. GOVERNMENT RESIGNS (Rec. 1 a.m.) SYDNEY. May 13. The Prime Minister, Mr A. Mair, to-day tendered the resignation of the New South Wales Government. Mr W. J. McKell later saw the Governor, Lord Wakehurst, and intimated that he would be able to announce the names of the new Labour Ministry possibly next Monday. No marked change has occurred in the election position as a result of to-day's checking of the polling figures.
