ANNUAL RELAY RACE WON BY CIVIL SERVICE i Given to commemorate the brilliant success of J. E. Lovelock in winning the 1500 Metres event at the Berlin Olympic Games in world record time, the Lovelock Trophy was competed for for the fifth time at the University Oval on Saturday -afternoon. Eight teams took part in the annual relay race conducted by the Otago University Harrier Club, and competition was keen with the ideal conditions which prevailed. Teams consisted of six runners, each of whom had to run 1500 metres before handing on the baton. The rac* resulted in a further triumph for the Civil Service Club, whose No. 1 team won the event fairlv comfortably from Caversham. with University third. This is the third time in succession that Civil Service has won the trophy. The Otago Centre'sbaton for the Sealed Handicap was won by Mornington, with University third and Leith fourth. The handicapping was excellent, as only 54sec separated the first three teams in the Sealed Handicap. After the first change-over, Civil Service steadily forged ahead, and finished nearly 400 yards ahead of the last Caversham man. The best individual effort was that of H. Nelson (Civil Service), whose time of 4min 12sec was an outstanding performance for a junior. L. Bradshaw (Civil Service) also ran well to record 4min 26sec, and other good efforts were A. R. Geddes (Civil Service) 4min 29sec. and L. K. White (Caversham) 4min 31sec. The event was efficiently controlled by the University Club, which had the assistance of officials of the Otago Centre. At the conclusion of the race the two trophies were presented to the successful teams by Dr J. B. Dawson. The following are the results:— The Placings Civil Service No. 1 (R. Whittlestone, G. Nelson. McKinlay); 3min 25sec; 26min 2sec 3 CLUB RUNS Mornington and University Clubs.—A combined Mornington and University pack ran up Signal Hill to the monument, and then down into Ravensbourne. From here a run home to the University Oval resulted as follows:—K. Lindley 1, K, Hugget 2, R. Kewan 3. Caversham Club.—The Caversham Club ran from the North End Boating Club's pavilion. The runners followed the Port Chalmers road to Maia and back. A. J.; Barr was first home, C. McGregor second and D. Beatson third. Baptist Club. —Starting- from the Roslyn Baptist Church, the pack made its way to the base of Five Tree Hill and then on to the Taieri road and down through Wakari. where a run home resulted: D. Bilson 1. G. Blackman 2, A. Dixon 3. Leith Club.—The run was held from the Dundas Street Hall up the bullock track and Leith Valley to the Queen's drive. Running along the belt, the pack cut down across George street to Castle street. From here a run home was held. The result was: R. Paton 1. W. Freeman 2. R. Jefferson 3.
