OTAGO’S ALLOCATION FULL AMOUNT SUBSCRIBED TWO PLANES NAMED The Mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) has announced that the amount sanctioned by the Government as Otago’s contribution to the Spitfire Fund, £II,OOO (New Zealand currency) has been subscribed. The Mayor stated that he desired t# thank the people of Otago fcr their generous response to his appeal. They would have the satisfaction, he added, of knowing that they had made provision for two Spitfire planes t- take part in the British plan of attack and defence. Mr Allen stated that he had invited the Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser, to supply suitable names for the two planes, that Mr Fraser had suggested “Otago” and “Otago II,” and that they had been adopted. A letter received from the Prime Minister stated that he was very gratified to learn of the satisfactory result ff the Mayor's Spitfire aeroplane appeal and that he desired to express his appreciation of the generous response of Otago citizens. The amount subscribed was sufficient to enable two machines to be purchased.
