Mr J. McAra was a passenger for Wellington by the through express yesterday. Mr R. Merrett Wilkinson has been elected a member of the Pharmacy Board of New Zealand, representing chemists of the combined Otago and Southland' districts. Dr F. L. Partem, a graduate of the Otago Medical School, who is at present stationed at a hospital at Horsham, Essex, England, has received the qualification of the Royal College of Surgeons, London. The Chancellor of the Otago University (Mr W. J. Morrell) said at the meeting of the council yesterday afternoon he knew that every member of the council would wish to congratulate niost heartily their fellow member, Miss Muriel May. on her appointment as principal of the Southland Girls High School. He wished her every happiness and success in her career in Southland, a sentiment which was applauded by the members. The services of Mr J. G. Barnes as secretary of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association for the past four years were suitably recognised. at last night's meeting of the centre, when he was presented with a fountain pen and a barometer. The president (Mr C. W. Clark), who made the presentation, said that Mr Barnes was joining the Royal New Zealand Air Force on December 23, and his absence would be a big loss to the centre. Mr Barnes was a successful competitor who had retained his interest in the sport and had given valuable service to the centre. Mr Clark wished Mr Barnes every success in the Air Force and a safe return. Mr Barnes made a suitable acknowledgment of the gifts. Passengers by the north-bound Union Airways plane yesterday were Mr J. Klrkhope and Mr W. A.-Pattison for Christchurch, and Mr H. T. Speight and Mr J. McL. Stafford for Wellington. Passengers by the south-bound plane were Mrs S. Sherwood from PalmerSton North, Mr J. McNeil and Mrs J. McNeil from Wellington, Mr H. W. Vercoe, Miss C. M. Cutten, Mrs E.,G. Gunn, and Mr E. Lindsay from Christchurch.
