PALMERSTON Borough Council Meeting The monthly meeting of the council was held on Monday evening, the Mayor (Mr W. B. Galloway) presiding. Crs A. Coleman, L. V. Rasmussen, J. Mcßae, G. Ross, C. R. Coutts, and Dr T. T. Thomas were in attendance. Messrs John Forrest and diaries Richard Stringer were appointed to fill two vacancies in the council, and after being sworn in by the Mayor, took their seats at the council table. The superintendent of the Fire Brigade (Mr A, McGregor) submitted a comprehensive report upon the appliances of the brigade, and recommended the raising of two fire plugs and purchase of seven new covers.—The report was adopted. The foreman reported that 12 chains of kerbing and channelling had been laid down in Ronaldsay street South at a cost of £52 7s 2d. It was decided to complete this work on the western side of the street from the northern boundary to Mrs F Adams’s residence. The Health Committee’s recommendation that fortnightly services for removal of refuse and nightsoil be instituted, was adopted, the services to commence when lorry driver’s appointment has been finally decided. Accounts amounting to £475 Os 7d were passed for payment. Home Guard

A combined meeting of the members of the borough and county councillors was held in the Town Hall supper room yesterday to meet Messrs Sinel and Hay, of the National Service Department, who are conducting a tour to organise the Home Guard in the South Island. The Mayor. Mr W. B. Galloway, presided, and Introduced the visitors, who outlined the aims of the Guard, and stated how the members of local organisations and others could serve, irrespective of age. At the conclusion of the addresses, it was decided to ask Major Tonkin, of Oamaru. to visit the district on the following dates, when local meetings would be held at; the following centres: November 13. Shag Point, 7 p.m.; Palmerston, 8.30 p.m. November 14. Goodwood, 8 p.m. November 15, Green Valley, 7 p.m.; Dunback, 8.30 p.m. November 16, Macraes. 8.30 p.m. Colonel Bruce-Smith, of Dunedin, was also in attendance. Queen Carnival Bazaar ■ The bazaar was successfully concluded on Friday night with a record attendance. > The chief attraction' of the evening was the final of the tug-of-war.
