• RANFURLY Golf The annual 'interclub match between the Ranfurly and Middlemarch Clubs was played at Ranfurly during the week-end. The weather was ideal, and the linns were in good order, although the dry conditions made the game somewhat tricky. The president, Mr Jamieson, extended a welcome to the visitors, and expressed the wish that the return match would be arranged for a fortnight hence. Ranfurly were the winners, the details being as follows (Middlemarch names first):— Men; McGregor lost to Dr Kidd 4 and 3, Cameron lost to Macdonald 6 and 4, Pacey lost to Long 4 and 3, Gillespie lost to Gilbert 2 and 1. Johnston lost to Dr, Eudey 4 and 3, Hall beat Jamieson 4 and 3, Stevens lost to Anderson 4 and 3, Glover beat Fraser 2 and 1. Murray beat Gilchrist 4 and 3. Women; Mrs Stevens beat Mrs Jamieson 2 up, Mrs Aubrey lost to Mrs Macdonald 1 down, Mrs Polasek lost to Mrs Wilson 5 and 4. Mrs McAuley lost to Mrs Gilchrist 3 and 2, Mrs Murray lost to Mrs Weir 5 and 4, Mrs Spratt lost to Miss Grant 2 down. Miss MacDonald beat Miss Mills 2 lip.

Cricket The Maniototo Cricket Association opened its competition on Saturday last. Patearoa opened with a comfortable win over Waipiata, their principal scorer being F. Greer, 53 retired.- Mulholland, for Ranfurly, and McAtamney, for Patearoa, both finished with good bowling averages, their figures being seven for 13. Patearoa 203 (F. Greer 53 retired, J. D. Blakely 47. H. Pearce 20 retired, J. W. Blakely 33 retired; Gibson two for 32, Strode two for 21) beat Waipiata 40 (J. Gibson 14; McAtamney seven for 13, J. W. Blakely two for 17), Ranfurly 144 (J. P. Mulholland 38. J. Kearney 21, Talbot 33, J. C. Mujholland 24; Brown four for 46, Knowles four for 41) beat Naseby 122 (Maskell 44, Brown 30; J. P. Mulholland seven for 13, Lynch three for 18).

Oturehua 80 (Becker 40, Barber 14) beat Becks 35 (Becker six for 13). The draw for next aatiuday is as follows: —Patearoa v. Becks, Oturehua v. Naseby, Ranfurly v. Waipiata. Fishing Local fishermen have not met with much success this season. The Taieri River, which in past seasons has not been considered at its best till later in the season, has been running too high and dirty to make good fishing possible. One sportsman, Mr Watt, who visited the district recently, was, however, successful in hooking a 121 b (dressed) trout, and in a bag of seven fish the total weight was 481 b. Mr Anderson, dentist, will visit Ranfurly again on Friday, November B.—Advt. QUEENSTOWN Outbreak of Fire A fire broke out in Mr T. O’Connor’s billiard room on Saturday shortly after midnight. When the fire brigade arrived on the scene the middle section of the lower side wall was well alight, and the building would have been enveloped in a short time. The prompt action of a neighbour in giving the alarm and the speed of the brigade in turning out saved the building. The equipment was damaged by fire and water. The fire is said to have been started by a live cigarette butt. The property belongs to Mrs M. McCarthy, a former resident. Home Guard Major P. McKenzie, area officer for the Central Otago district, has commenced a tour, and is meeting with considerable success. He visited Head of Lake on Monday and went to Roxburgh yesterday.

WANAKA Home Guard A meeting of those interested in the formation of a local branch of the Home Guard was held in the Town Hall, Wanaka, on October 25. There ! was an attendance of about 20 residents, who were addressed by the district commander, Lieutenant-colonel A, S. Bruce-Smith. It was decided to form a Home Guard Group to be known as the Upper Cliitha Home Guard Locality. Messrs D. C. Aubrey and A. Allison were appointed to represent the county councils concerned, and the following committee was set up:—Messrs E. A. Waters (Cardrona), G. L. Morris' (Mount Barker), G. Hall (Luggate), H. Hodgkinson (Hawea Flat), D. Dennlston (Hawea Flat), A. S. Milne, W. Manson (Wanaka), W. A. Scaife (Farmers’ Union), C. Templeton (Albert Town and Maungawera), and J. Stevenson (Makarora). Patriotic Gifts The following donations are acknowledged by the secretary of the local Patriotic Committee (Mr K. Davie):— Previously acknowledged, £lO6 2s 3d; Wanaka Golf Club £lB, Mr L. J. Best 10s, Mesdames S. Rainfall The rainfall recorded at Wanaka for the month of October is as follows, last year’s figures being given in parentheses;—Rainfall, 5.39 in (.76in); number of rain days, 8 (3). This is the highest monthly rainfall for many years. A. and P. Meeting The annual meeting of the Upper Clutha A. and P. Society was held last Thursday. The president, Mr H. Stokes, moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, stated that, in spite of a difficult year a succesful fixture had been held and a cash profit of £6O was shown. The motion was carried. It was resolved to hold the show next year on the nearest Saturday to March 17. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr H. L. BEAUMONT Air Force Queen Fund The final effort for the Air Force Queen fund was made on Saturday last, when a card and dance evening was held. The sum of £3 was taken at the door, and, with art union money, another £l2 9s 6d was added to the fund. This brings the Beaumont effort to £62 15s, which does not include the stock drive.
