BALCLUTHA Coursing The South Otago Coursing Club held a meeting on the phuupton course at Balcl utha on Saturday, when a number of voung dogs were tried out. Only one stake was competed,foi. the Telford Cup, which resulted:—A. Middlemas s (n.a.) Darkest beat A. Low's Pop-eyes Mate (3—o), and won the stake At the close the president of the club (Mr James Gold) presented the cup to the winner. Officials for the day were:Judge, Mr James Gold: slipper, Mr C. Garside: hare steward, Mr J. Lawrence: slip steward, Mr P. Jardlne. Rugby Football On the Show Ground, Balclutha, two good games were played on Saturday, the weather was bright and sunny, with no wind, and the ground was in perfect ordei. There was a good crowd to witness the senior game, Clutha v. Tahakopa. Clutha backs, however, dominated the play, and the game ended in a win for Clutha by 27 points to nil. The winning score was made up of seven tries, three of which were converted. Tries were got by R. McLeod, Washington, McPherson. Gray. Shand (2). Laing, the goal kickers being Moffat (2) and Shand. The Tahakopa team held its own in the scrums and in the loose, but the backs lacked co-ordina-tion Mr C. Williams was the referee. The final for the Third Grade banner between Clutha and Crescent provided a good “ curtain-raiser." Clutha won an even game by 11 points to 5. WAIMATE Rugby Matches No senior Rugby matches were played at Waimate on Saturday, a friendly game between Southern and Makikihi being cancelled owing to sickness among the players. Junior games in the sub-union’s competitions resultedl Southern defeated Old Boys by 11 points to 3 High School defeated Huimai, 17 points to 6. Third Grade.—Rovers 6 defeated High school 3. Basketball Out of respect to Mrs H. V. Connor, president of the South Canterbury Basketball Association, who had suffered a bereavement, the games set down for Saturday in the Waimate Sub-association's competitions were postponed. Over £2OOO for Fund At a special meeting of the Red Cross Centre in Waimate, the treasurer (Captain G. T. Hennessy) reported that the community sing conducted by the Waimate Savage Club had realised more than £360 for the Sick and Wounded Fund. The electric washing machine raffled by the Stock Auctioneers’ Association had brought in some £240, and the £5 grocery order given by the Self Help a further £25. With other efforts, dances and entertainments and various collections, the total amount raised for the fund would exceed £2OOO. The meeting carried a resolution congratulating the people of Waimate county and borough on the wonderful result. OMAKAU Rugby Football At Pembroke on Saturday, Matakanui A were defeated by Wanaka by 12 points to 9. The Matakanui B team had a' bye. Golf Owing to the links being under snow, no play was possible on Saturday. The third round for the Scrymgeour Memorial and a medal round for those not taking part in the memorial draw will be played next Saturday. Hotels Change Hands Two well-known hotels in the district have recently changed hands. The Ida Valley Hotel, Poolburn, formerly held by Mr. W. O’Connor, has been taken over by Mr W L. Milne, of Omakau, and the Railway Hotel at Lauder, formerly under the control of Mr N. Smith, * has been •taken over by Mr J. Stuart, of Lauder. The Weather The weather last week was fine but cold, and heavy frosts were experienced. The snow has now disappeared from the fiats, but the ranges are carrying heavy coatings. EASTERN SOUTHLAND Rugby Football Games Rugby football matches in Eastern Southland on Saturday provided a surprise result in the defeat of the competition leader, Pioneer, at the hands of Albion, which won by 3 points to ml. As the ground was in a fairly heavy condition the game resolved itself into a forward struggle. ' V. Stephens scored the only try of the match. Mataura had an easy win over Balfoui by 24 points to 8. For Mataura, Adam (2), R. Clarke, and Gibson scored tries and Hannah kicked a field goal. Currie converted four tries, Higgins scored two tries for Balfour and Gillespie converted one.
