GOLF

SOUTH ISLAND TITLE GOOD QUALIFYING SCORES TRICKY CONDITIONS AT BALMACEWEN Considering the difficulties created by a wind of almost gale force andskiffs of ram, the standard of golf ‘in the preliminary stages of the South Island and Otago Provincial Amateur Championships at Balmacewen yesterday was excellent. Thirty-two players qualified, and the fact that the longest aggregate to qualify was 167 is sufficient testimony to the strength of the field. Although there were no players of the top flight from outside Otago, the entry was worthy in playing quality of the tournament. The qualifying list was headed by T. W. Wight, the youthful defender of the Otago title, whose 74—75—149 was just' ahead of J A. Scouler’s 75 —75 150. Dr K. Ross who was round in 73 in the afternoon, brought in the best card of the day. Scouler’s 75 was the best round of the morning until only the tail end of the field was to come in. Then T. W. Wight brought in a 74. Both were very good rounds indeed. Wight played the first half in 36—nine 4’s in a row—and a birdie 4 at Tipperary made him one under fours going to the thirteenth. He found some trouble then however, and he did not play Manuka or the seventeenth well. Those were the only blemishes on a splendid round Scouler started with a 6. two over bogey, at the second; but,’in spite of another 6 at the eighth, he was out in 37. He was home in 38—also an excellent round Both of these players produced very accura’e golf indfeed. Three St. Clair players—F. W. Dixon and W W Clayton, with 77’s. ahd D C. Bennie with 78—were next on the morning’s list, Clayton’s card was marred by a 7 at the eighth, but otherwise thev were three good cards.

There were one or two examples of greatly improved form in the afternoon. That of Dr Ross was the outstanding one. He had returned an 81 in the morning, but after lunch he played model £olf in the tricky conditions and was round in the scratch score, 73, which enabled him to qualify fourth.

He slipped strokes at the first and eighth holes, but was out in 36. A 5 at the fifteenth- was his only mistake in a second half of 37—altogether an exceptionally good round. J. W. Trewern. too,' staged a fine recovery from a morning 84 to a 74. T. W. Wight took one stroke more then in the morning, but that gave him the best aggregate and the Ritchie Cup from Scouler by one stroke. His game around and on the greens was almost flawless. Scouler played a very steady second round of 75. J. N. Lemon qualified third by virtue of a second round of 75. and Clayton and Bennie held their form. Dixon lapsed to an 87. however, and lost his position. The two surprisinglv high aggregates were those of B. V. Wright, defender of the South Island title, and A. G. Sime the Otago Club scratch player. Wright todk 80 in the morning, comprising a 37 for the second half after a disastrous 43 over the first nine holes, and in the afternoon he could not do better than 82. 40 out and 42 home. Sime’s form was worse. Everything went wrong in the morning, and he took 85. He appeared to be playing better in the afternoon, but still could not break 80. Wright qualified fourteenth and Sime twenty-eighth. Qualifying List
