WELFARE OF MINERS

WORK IN UNITED KINGDOM EXPENDITURE TO DATE (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, Aug. 10. (Received Aug. 11, at 7 p.m.) The year 1938 saw a record in miners’ welfare work in the United Kingdom, particularly in regard to the provision of pithead baths, which were provided last year for another 55,600 men, bringing the total affected since the inauguration of the movement to 328,000. In addition to the provision of pithead baths, the Miners’ Welfare Fund has spent nearly £5,260,000 to date on recreational and cultural activities, while over £3,500,000 has been contributed to convalescent homes for miners, hospitals, and ambulance and nursing services. Last year the expenditure totalled £1,264,302, bringing the aggregate of grants since the beginning of the fund to £ 16,386,706.
