ITALY AND GERMANY STATESMEN CONFERRING FURTHERANCE OF AXIS POLICY (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) ROME, Aug. 10. It is officially stated that Count Ciano and Herr von Ribbentrop will confer at Salzburg within a few days regarding the furtherance of the Axis policy. The Danzig situation, presumably, will be paramount. An official declared that Count Ciano and Herr von Ribbentrop will reach decisions with regard to the conduct of the Axis during the crisis in September, which is considered inevitable. ITALIAN LEADER’S EFFORTS AVERTING EUROPEAN WAR LONDON, Aug. 10. The Rome correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain says Count Ciano is expected to urge moderation in the meeting with Herr von Ribbentrop. It is common gossip in diplomatic circles that Signor Mussolini is doing his utmost to avert a European war over Danzig. It is believed that he has asked the Pope to instruct the papal nuncios in Warsaw and Berlin to press for a peaceful solution. CAUSE OF ANXIETY (Independent Cable Service) ROME, Aug. 11. (Received Aug. 12, at 1.45 a.m.) The Popolo di Roma, commenting on the meeting between Count Ciano and Herr von Ribbentrop, says the political situation is certainly not devoid of causes of anxiety, but they are not so grave as to arouse extensive apprehension.
