The annual meeting of the Waikouaiti Ladies’ Bowling Club was held on Thursday afternoon, when the president (Mrs Griffiths) was in the chair. Mrs A. Herbert presided over the monthly meeting of the Housewives’ Union when members discussed the high price of potatoes. Although the shortage was partly due to climatic conditions last season, the market here was still further depleted by large quantities being sent to the North island. The inclusion of small screenings (dross) in household coal was deplored, ans a recommendation made that the dross be sold for other profitable uses such as briquettes, etc. Members, expressed satisfaction that the committee appointed by the Government to prevent extortionate rents was doing a service to the community. It was resolved to send a letter of sympathy to the Prime Minister hoping for a speedy recovery. # ¥

The Opoho branch of the League of Mothers held its fifth annual meeting on Tuesday evening, with Mrs Lousley E residing. The election of officecarers resulted: —Mrs Parr, president; Mesdames Lousley. Carson and Hurting, vice-presidents; Mrs White, secretary: Mrs Searle, assistant secretary: Mrs Drake, treasurer; Mrs Butler, assistant treasurer; and Mrs Gardiner, magazine secretary. A good number of members were present at the meeting of the Psychology Circle of the Otago Women s Club on Wednesday last. Miss Olive. Mercer being in the chair. The subject for discussion was “ The Magic of Appreciation.” the following members contributing with papers and experiences: Mesdames McMillan. V Smith, Wakefield Holmes. Cowan. Misses Crow, Holland. Arlidge. J. K. Brown. Fenwick. and Reynolds. It was shown that art galleries, schools, museums and churches were built because people appreciated the value of beauty, knowledge, and religion: study groups were formed because people realised the value of co-operation and fellowship, and knew that a group mind had access to knowledge beyond that of the individual, Our conduct was often stimulated by our appreciation of certain values. Burbank, for example, having his creative faculties stirred through his study of plant life. Instances were given to show how appreciation oiled the machinery of domestic life, and how, if constantly practised, it lifted neoole out of the iron grip of their limitations. Afterwards tea was served and members stayed for a social hour together. * * *

At 10 Downing street, on July 18, Mrs Neville Chamberlain held an afternoon reception (says our London correspondent, writing on July 20).
