WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION

The June meeting of the Dunedin Central branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held on Tuesday last, Mrs Hiett (acting president) being in the chair. Devotional service was led by Mrs M. Ballantyne, her theme being the power of prayer, and that we should all be encouragers. not discouragers, of every good work. Correspondence was read from the London secretary of the World Federation of Temperance Workers, and also from the Dominion secretary of the W.C.T.U., Wellington, regarding the competition for suitable posters for the union’s stall at the Centennial Exhibition. The treasurer (Miss F. Macandrew) gave a satisfactory report on the recent bring-and-buy sale for headquarters funds, and Sister Elinor, deaconess of Firsi Church, gave an Interesting address on some phases of her work in the city. She mentioned many instances of where the home wrecker and the wrecker of useful young lives was alcohol. The drinking of alcohol at dances was like planting noxious weeds in a garden. Sister Elinor deplored the neglect of Bible reading and said that sincere prayer was the outstanding need of the world to-day, prayer for world peace, woild purity and world sobriety. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Sister Elinor for her interesting address.
