QUEENSTOWN Christmas Visitors The town is gradually filling with visitors for the holidays. The big event over the period will be the Citizens' Carnival, for which a full programme of social events is scheduled. Rifle Shooting The third competition for the president's trophy and P. Reid Championship under the auspices of the Wakatipu Defence Rifle Club was held recently. The following are the scores:—

Acclimatisation Society The quarterly meeting of the Lakes District Acclimatisation Society was held on Tuesday evening. December 20. Dr W. A. Anderson presided. A letter was received from C. Ironside, Pembroke, asking if netting licences were obtainable for Lake Wanaka—To be informed that the society was not granting netting licences at present. The Otago Acclimatisation Society asked for support in a request to the Minister for the inclusion of crossbred ducks in the list of game that may be shot each year, and that those killed be included in the bag limit—Request to be supported. The Otago Society outlined steps it intended taking to prevent holders of Otago licences from shooting in the Lakes District. The Department of Internal Affairs forwarded a circular regarding damage done to trout by shags. The necessity for research and unbiased consideration of the problem was pointed out.— Received. . The Department of Internal Affairs asked for the society's recommendations for next open season for game. These were as follows:—" Duck season, two months from the first Saturday in May; pukeko, 14 days: Paradise duck, an extension to 14 days to be asked for. this species being, reported to be very plentiful, especially at the Head of the Lake, where farmers complained of damage to crops and pastures: quail, three months; other species, as at present. A close season to be asked for in 1941; no fresh sancturies to be recommended; bag limits to remain unaltered; the licence fee for native and imported game to be £1" Major Mackenzie, delegate to the South Island Societies' Conference, submitted a brief report on the confcrcncc Mr Buckham's suggestion that the form of the society's licence be reviewed and amended was agreed to. The chairman stated that he had interviewed the Minister of Internal Affairs 'Mr W. E. Parry) during his recent visit to Queenstown, regarding (he necessity for a special fishing licence for the Lakes District.—The Minister had promised to give favourable consideration to the matter. The chairman reported on the number of fry liberated in the district. The matter of repairs to the hatchery was left in the hands of the chairman and secretary. It was decided that the department be approached with a view to obtaining 100.000 ova of rainbow trout. Accounts amounting to £7 lis lid were passed for payment. Personal Mr W. L. Davis, of Oturehua, is the guest of his daughter, Mrs G. Morris. Mrs C. A. Inglis, of Invercargill, is the guest of her mother. Mrs B. Curtis. Mr Kevin Lynch, who Is a student at Essendon College, Victoria, is spending the vacation with his parents, Mr and Mrs P. T. Lynch, Eastern terrace.

Mrs E. Knowles and her granddaughter, Kathleen, are the guests of Mr and Mrs H. Knowles, Makarewa. Mr and Mrs J. Adams are the guests of Mr and Mrs W. H. Paterson, Billv Creek, Arrowtown. Miss Anne Calder is spending the summer vacation in Southland. Mrs A. M. Mcßride, Mosgiel, and Mrs V. de Bettincourt, of Invercargill, were recent guests of the Misses Fitzpatrick, Arthur's Point. Miss Mary Mclnnes has returned from a holiday spent in Christchurch and Dunedin, Mrs 0. Overton has returned from a short visit to Invercargill. . Mrs J. McCarthy paid a short visi* to Invercargill last week. Miss Eve Curtis spent a few days m Dunedin recently. Mrs C. M. Inglis, who has been the guest of Dr and Mrs D'Ath at Mosgiel. has returned home. Mr and Mrs Groves, of Port Chalmers, were among recent visitors to Queenstown. Miss Molly Mackenzie, a trainee at Karitane Hospital, Dunedin, spent her vacation with her parents, Mr and Mrs A. Mackenzie, Mount Nicholas Station Mrs J. Cook, of Eglinton Valley, is the guest of her parents, Mr and Mrs W. Edwards. Dr Gilchrist, of Dunedin, spent a few days in Queenstown recently. Mr J. Shearer, of Dunedin, spent a few days in Queenstown recently as the guest of Mr and Mrs Stanley Shearer. Mr and Mrs J. Dwyer and family have returned from a holiday spent in Canterbury. . Mr J. McCarthy has returned from an extended visit to Auckland. Mr and Mrs E. N. Strain and family are spending a holiday at the Routeburn. , , Miss Clare O'Donnell, who has been on the relieving staff of the local Public School, left on Thursday for her home in Winton. ■> Mrs Waghorn has returned to Limehills after spending an extended holiday in Queenstown.
