MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The Lake County Council met during the week, Mr L. Lee presiding. Correspondence The council acceded to a request from the Main Highways Board to give special attention to the conditioning and maintenance of main highways during the holiday season. » The resident engineer, Public Works Department, Alexandra, advised that , the department was prepa::d to proI vide the necessary pipes for culverts on Hogan's Gully road and the Arrow-town-Lake Hayes highway to deal with seepage of water. Certain conditions were set out to which the council agreed. Correspondence was roceived from the Lands and Survey Departmeni stating that arrangements had been made for the surrender of the camping site at Glendhu, and for reservations of the land for camping.—The Audit Department had also agreed to the council spending funds for improvements.—The inspector reported on what had already been done to provide for campers this season, and the council resolved to reduce the fees to campers to 7s 6d per week after the fourth week. The council was advised by the Department of Internal Affairs regarding the regulations pertaining to the approved, remedy for dogs suffering from hydatid disease. An additional sum of Is per dog would be added to the fees. It was agreed to contribute £5 towards the immediate expenses of the Frankton Aerodrome Board. General The council decided that one or more delegates attend the meeting in Roxburgh on January 25, 1939, to discuss the matter of issuing a guide to Centl*3l Ot3oO The tender of Mr G. Chalmers for manufacture of dog collars for the ensuing year was accepted. It was decided to ask Mrs Briley; of Pembroke, to remove her house off the roadline on the south-east side of Lake Wanaka by March 31. Construction of Bridges The inspector made a report on the proposed construction of bridges. He stated that the Public Works Department was desirous of having some of the bridges widened. The widening would affect Bahantyne's crossing (Pembroke-Luggate road) from 12ft to 24ft; the Precipice Creek bridge (Head of Lake), from Bft to 12ft; the bridge at Hall's Creek (Glendhu) from Bft to lift. In view of the extra widths for Ballantyne's bridge it was thought that more than likely the road would be declared a main highway. They were now awaiting a visit fromvMr Fletcher Roberts, consulting engineer, Dunedin, who would look into ' the matter of the bridges Finance The financial statement showed a debit balance of £ll4O 3s Bd. Accounts submitted for payment at the meeting totalled £336 Is lid. Rates owing amounted to £2858 2s id and Government grants to £2931 9s 7d. Inspector's Report The county inspector's report covering operations since last meeting stated that the graders had been working on State or main highways for the greater part of the period. The Wehr grader's power unit had been extensively damaged and negotiations were under way for another grading unit. The lorries were, also working on main highways. The main roads throughout the district generally were in tolerably good order, and would receive further attention to cope with holiday traffic. The report was adopted and the council approved of the action of the inspector and Cr Cockburn in purchasing a second-hand grader for £2OO to replace the damaged one. The county inspector was instructed to attend to a portion of the road near the Niger Bluff, Pembroke, which was in danger of being washed away by the river. An offer was received for cutting, sawing, and planing timber out of the Cardrona nursery. In view of the usefulness of the timber in connection with the building of bridges the council viewed the proposal favourably, action being held over in the meantime. In response to a request from the member for Kingston Riding, the inspector stated that he hoped to send the grader into the riding by the end of January. • The matter of holidays for the outside staff was left in the hands of the inspector.
