THE Otago Daily Times. “Inveniam viam aut faciam.” (Established November 15. 1861.) DUNEDIN. TUESDAY, DEC. 24. 1867

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

It is scarcely possible to magnify the importance of the information which appears in another column in the correspondence from W. C. Young, by which it is to be gathered that a direct shipment of Salmon ova will at once be made to Otago. In a letter lately published in Melbourne, from Mr Thomas Ashley to Mr Youl, that gentleman dilated upon the value of establishing the Salmon in the Australasian Colonies He it was who first suggested the Stormontfield experiment. An enthusiast on the subject, he did not shrink from " backing his opinion." He became the lessee of the Galway fisheries in Ireland, and for years, at an immense expense, and with untiring devotion, he cultivated the propagation of Salmon. The result has been to prove to him that the fish is capable of enormous increase. ... There may be scores of rivers and streams in Otago suitable for the ultimate reception of the Salmon; but in the selection for the first experiment the utmost care should be taken and every favorable feature be searched after. The river determined on, a great deal will remain to be done. Not only will the apparatus require to be erected, but the amplest provision will have to be made for the transport of the ova. There must be no hitch and no delay. The ice required must be at hand —the steamer ready to proceed to the river—the boat to row up, if it is decided to use this means of transport, must be sent to the spot; or, if land carriage is to be adopted, the persons selected must be drilled to what they have to do, and be immediately available. A competent superintendent is being selected at Home, to come out under a two years' engagement, so that skilled aid will be at hand. All that can be done on the other side we may rely will be done; it is to be hoped the Province will not be remiss in making the preparations of which it will have the charge. It would be impossible to adequately describe the vast results which may arise to the Province if the experiment prove successful. The competition for the rifle presented to the Volunteers by Mr Sargood, of London, will take place at the Kaikorai Butts on Thursday morning . The Clutha Ferry races are appointed to take place on Thursday and Friday, the 30th and 31st January. Arrangements have been made for five races each day, and the stakes are sufficiently attractive to induce competition between horses of a good stamp. The Committee of the Caledonian Society appointed to adjudicate upon the competition poems have decided that the poem sent in by Mr Barr, of Craigielee, is entitled to the gold medal offered by the Society. It has been arranged that Mr Bavr Will read his poem on the first day of the Gathering. The sale of reclaimed land, by Messrs M'Landress, Hepburn, and Co., on behalf of the Government, which took place on Saturday, was very well attended. The biddings were, as a whole, very spirited; and the total sum realised was L 4060. The,lots first sold were to the south,,of Jetty street.
