January 26 28.—Forbury Park T.C. ’anuary 28 February I.—Nelson T.C. Cutting the Distance If reinsmen continue to adopt the suicidal policy of reducing a two-mile race to one of about half that distance Lawn Derby’s speed will give him a great chance at Auckland. Favourites In the north it is predicted that Horsepower will start favourite for the Auckland Trotting Cup, and those most likely to trouble him arc Fine Art, Toorak and Bexley Girl. Safe Arrival V. Leeming has arrived in Auckland with Toorak, Colonel Grattan and Connenora, who is a five-year-old trained by M. B. Edwards. Connenora has 2min 41 3-ssec and 3min 15 2-ssec to her credit. At Ashburton The acceptances received in connection with the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting are just about all that could be desired. Superlative quality rather than quantity forms the basis of the field for the Ashburton Handicap, and the same remark applies to the balance of the principal events on the card. A Record Return The totalisator return of £20,312 at the Waikato Trotting Club’s meeting recently was a record, the previous best being £28,616 for the meeting held on March 7, 1925. On that occasion R. A. McMillan, who did not win a race this year, was the most successful horseman, winning with Conscript and Scandal, and gaining minor placings with Rol Alto and Billy Whiz. The principal event was won by Glandore, who did not win again until he surprised in the Raglan Handicap at the 1931 Waikato summer meeting Parisienne Parisienne, the outstanding pacer at the inter-Dominion Trotting Championships where she won her three heats and was the runner-up to Pot Luck in the Grand Final, has, been working splendidly at Yaldhurst, and her trainer, B. B. Berry, holds the view that she is coming to the peak of her form once again. If that assumption proves to he correct, Parisenne should gain one of the places in the Ashburton Trotting Cup on Boxing Day, and as she will be bracketed with another splendid stayer in Lucky Jack, this combination will be strongly favoured. Strong Representation Canterbury horses have an excellent record in the Auckland Trotting Cup in recent years, though In faster classes than the 4min 31sec provided this year. Since 1930, Carmel, Royal Silk, Indianapolis, Roi I’Or, Graham Direct, and Willow Wave, the winner last year, have won the race for this centre, the winning sequence being broken in 1932 by Great Parrish and in 1936 by King’s Warrior. Roi I’Or holds the race record of 4min 15 2-ssec. Form suggests that this year (says the Star-Sun) the Auckland Cup will again come to Canterbury, as this centre is represented by Fine Art, Horsepower, Toorak and Waipahi. Fine Art, of course, stands out on form, while Horsepower also has many admirers. Waipahi is a proved sprinter, but on recent form can hold little appeal when compared with Fine Art. Toorak has proved himself under all conditions and over all distances, but he is one of the unluckiest horses racing as there always seems to be one better. This' season he has been second six times and once third in seven starts and it would be a fitting reward if he could win the Auckland Cup. A five-year-old bay horse by Wrack from Sundock, he is owned by Mr J. Richardson, of Dunedin, and trained by V. Leeming, at Prebbleton. Fine Art, Horsepower and Toorak comprise a formidable trio for the northern raid. Sign of Progress A particularly pleasing sign of progress is displayed in connection with the Champion Stakes, to be decided at the Ashburton meeting. It consists in the fact that each horse in the field, with one exception, can be found and traced in the Stud Book, In assisting to bring about such a pleasing state of affairs and a really definite sign of progress it could be claimed that Ashburton has done a tremendous amount of good work for the sport. It has been achieved by good stakes that carry a value which makes it necessary to produce a really good horse to capture them. The lopsided pedigree horse does not hold much chance of success in the principal events provided at Ashburton, and the fact cannot be too forcibly hammered home. The Ashburton Trotting Club has been endeavouring to cater for and create a high-class horse. The field for the New Zealand Champion Stakes, of £750, stands alone as a finger post, pointing the way through the Stud Book to success on the track, A glance at the breeding of those engaged may prove interesting. Bedrock is a filly by Nelson Derby from Athemey Lass, by Great Audubon—Little Kewpie, by Diadem—Little Alma, by Telemeter, a thoroughbred horse with the next dam by another thoroughbred by Perkin Warbeck from a Blackwood Abdullah mare. Revision is a filly by Jack Potts from Olive Turmoil, a mare that cannot be readily traced and a blot on the field from a breeding point of view. Aldershot was got by Wrack from the imported Trix Pointer a good race mare and the dam of Wrackler, the wonder horse of New Zealand, as he proved fast at both gaits. Taiki is a gelding by Grattan Loyal from Becky Logan, by Logan Pointer—Miss Becky, by Electioneer— Becky, by Vanderbilt—Lady Grey by Berlin Adadallah. Becky Logan is also the dam of Graham Direct. Shadow Son was got by Red Shadow from a daughter of Maxegin—and a Muricata mare—Muricata was go* by Mauritius from Ocean Wave, by Rothschild from Ripple, by Fleur de Lys. Muricata is also the dam of Ahuriri, Taraire, Katute and others. Fleur de Lys is probably identical with the thoroughbred son of Traducer and Fleurange, a mare imported from France. Coquette is a filly by Grattan Loyal from Bonny Logan (2min 7 4-ssec). by Logan

Pointer-—Bonilene. Nelson Eddy is a colt by Nelson Derby from Lady Bee, by Great Audubon —Lady Sybil, by Rothschild—Thelma, and the last on the list is Wainoni Girl, by Grattan Loyal from Atralette, by Man o’ War — Belette, by Prince Imperial—Fanny wood, by Blackwood Abdallah.
